Symptoms
- Smart Key Not Found on the dash when you press start
- Smart Key Error when you try the emergency start (key fob held against the backup position)
- The ignition won't switch on, so the car doesn't crank at all
- Remote locking may still work, which makes it look like the key is fine (it usually is)
- Started straight after a battery change, disconnection, jump-start or a flat battery
- A weak battery or failing alternator has been draining voltage beforehand
Why it happens
The XF's front smart junction box (FSJB) stores key and configuration data in an EEPROM memory chip. When the supply voltage drops (a tired battery, a failing alternator, a jump-start or simply removing the battery), that memory can corrupt. The FSJB then no longer recognises the key, refuses to switch on the ignition, and the car won't crank.
A new key won't fix it, and neither will another battery. The junction box's data has to be properly repaired and the unit programmed back to the car.
Fault codes (DTCs)
What a diagnostic scanner typically shows. Exact codes vary with model year and scan tool.
| U3000-49 | Control Module – Internal Electronic Failure |
| U3000-46 | Control Module – Calibration / Parameter Memory Failure |
| U3003-16 | Battery Voltage – Circuit Voltage Below Threshold |
U3003-16 is often stored alongside, and is a clue to the low-voltage event that started it. If you see it, have the battery and alternator tested too.
Models affected
| Model | Years | Code |
|---|---|---|
| Jaguar XF | 2008-2015 | X250 |
Most common on the XF X250, but it can also happen on other Jaguar models with a smart junction box. Not a Land Rover fault.
How we fix it
- Confirm the fault. We test the battery, charging system and key, and read the modules to confirm it's the FSJB, not something cheaper.
- Repair the data properly. Using OEM (dealer-level) tools and high-quality equipment, we repair the corrupted junction box data.
- Program it to the car. The repaired unit is programmed and configured to your XF, and the keys are re-learnt.
- Test everything. Keyless start, emergency start, remote and all keys before we leave.
The result is no different from a main dealer fitting a brand-new part: the same tools and the same programming, done on your drive.
Why we don't offer a mail-in repair
Doing this properly needs a dealer tool connected to the car. Mail-in "repair" services have a very high failure rate, and even when they work, the part still has to be programmed to the car afterwards. So we only do this job with the car present: mobile, or at our Fengate shop if the car is recovered to us, with a same-day turnaround.
Before you call: quick checks
- Charge or test the battery; a low battery alone can show 'Smart Key Not Found'.
- Replace the key fob battery (CR2032), the cheap one to rule out.
- Try the emergency start. If it says 'Smart Key Error', the FSJB is the prime suspect.
- Don't keep trying to start it. You'll flatten the battery and make things worse.
Price & time
£350 within our mobile zone, including diagnosis, FSJB repair and programming. Done mobile or in our Fengate shop if the car is recovered to us, same-day turnaround. No fix, no fee.
Questions
Why does my Jaguar XF say 'Smart Key Not Found' after a battery change?
Low or interrupted voltage can corrupt the EEPROM inside the front smart junction box (FSJB), so it stops recognising the key and won't switch the ignition on. It needs repairing and programming to the car.
Do I need a new key?
Almost never. The key is usually fine. The fault is in the junction box, so a new key won't start the car.
Can I post the junction box to you?
No. A proper repair needs a dealer tool and the car present, and mail-in repairs have a high failure rate. We repair it on site or at our shop, same day.
Is it as good as a main dealer repair?
Yes. We use OEM tools and high-quality equipment, so the end result is the same as the dealer replacing the part, at a fraction of the cost and without waiting for a booking.
